Day 3 - Lounge Lizards - Kevin

After a very long day of travel, then followed by another long day starting off with a 6 hour hike through the jungle, we decided on a lounging day. I did drive to Puerto Viejo to forage for food at Mega Super market. The words "Mega" and "Super" would leave you laughing compared to what we would expect in an american grocery. Back home you can almost see the horizon inside a Super Walmart. Here Mega Super had about 12 aisles each about 20 feet long. It was a nice store and seems to be the norm for Costa Rica, Being I have an extremely limited Spanish vocabulary, shopping is an adventure. While trying to buy a prepaid cell phone at a Pali (Walmart owned) the sales clerk led me to an aisle and tried to sell me paper plates. Needless to say we never got a phone. Our friend told us everyone speaks English you will have no problems. I've met about six people who speak English, other than tourist, it's a problem. LOL

Went out roaming the town a few times after taking a nap, yeah baby a nap living vida loca. On one trip I spotted something across the road from where Abel our tour guide lives, there was a three toed sloth about 6 feet off the ground climbing up the tree. I ran back to the house to tell Stephanie and was laughing at myself thinking "It's a sloth he will be there when we get back" but I ran anyway. After returning with Stephanie I was amazed at his progress of climbing the tree. Yes they are slow but they climb at a steady pace.

Now the story of Tree House built on the ground. This rental house would be the tree house you would have built as a kid if your dad was an architect. It's 2 stories with mostly solid walls downstairs while upstairs is mostly open walls with a large elaborate lattice. No screens, openings big enough for any monkey to enter. All the window are hinged in the middle  with pins to allow the entire window open for air flow. Oh yeah air flow, we have yet to see a building down here with A/C. So if you are interest in coming here and the thoughts of no A/C and insects throughout your house this place is not for you. For me, I absolutely love it, like camping in a great tree house, what kid wouldn't like that?

The living room, looking out on to the patio. Upstairs wall is just a large open lattice.

Three large widows pivot for airflow, open lattice above windows.

A hotel in Manzanillo

Hope you like Costa Rica beer because this is all you can buy down here. Now the truly sad part of this story, the closest thing to bourbon is:
Jack Daniels
I'm going to hell for sure now.
