Day 9 - Cahuita Choo Choo Jungle Express - Kevin

After having breakfast and listening to Steph curse the birds in the yard, something she does every morning because they won't pause long enough for her to take their picture, we decided to go hiking. We headed North because evrything is North of Manzanillo except jungle and Panama border. We were going to Cahuita National Park that is along the coast and North of Puerto Viejo. In Puero Viejo they were having the Ticoman contest which is half of our Ironman contest home in the States. South of town at about 10am we pass the first runners on the final leg of the race. On our way out of town we saw a lot of riders on their second leg north of town.

The park is a jungle along the coast. We hiked a trail that followed the coast, great idea because we had an ocean breeze keeping us coll most of the time. We saw three groups of monkeys. Three sloths with the last one being only eight feet off the ground. Plenty of birds, which were mostly cursed by Steph again about their rudeness of not posing. Butterflies, bugs and lizards which sound amazingly like crocodiles while hiking near tall grass on a river bank, so I'm told, Great hike and we were exhausted when we finally got back to the car,

Stopped South of Puerto Viejo for dinner before the skies darkened and a thunderstorm raged. By the time we were done eating it was pitch black and pouring rain, it gets dark here at 5:30. On our way South there were still people out running the Ticoman in the pitch dark and rain. That's dedication because these roads are narrow and by American standards, which are low themselves, these people drive like madmen. They were the true Ticomen.

Anyhow, another great day with Stephanie!

Our resident Gray-Neck-Wood Rail

The Orkin man would be rich down here with all the termites.

Okay riders anyone seen where I left the life vests?

I now how he feels, there is one in every crowd.

We had to steo over him in the middle of the trail, then he left.

A local guide was trying tell tell us in broken English that this was a scorpion.

Here come the Monkeys

Sloths!
